Level 2 of our Word Families Phonics Resources (34 word families and 50 consonant sounds) to help your child start reading English. This level is meant to follow on from Word Families, Level 1.
English is a non-phonetic language. This means that there isn’t a direct relationship between how a word is said and how it is written. For example the sound combination -ight makes the sound ‘ite’ (eg, night). This is why teaching word families is important. Word families (or sound families) will help your child decode a group of sounds, without having to interpret these each time. Word families form the sound roots of words. For example, once your child has learnt the sound combination -ight, he can read ‘light’ and even longer words like ‘lighten’. Word families 1 will teach your child 34 of the most important word families. Each word family has a word list that uses these sounds. There is also a deck of 50 consonant sounds (singletons, diagraphs and consonant clusters) that she can use to make new words. These decks can be used in 4 ways: 1) Practice 50 consonant sounds 2) Practise 34 word families 3) Practise word lists for each word family 4) Make new words using consonant and word families decks together. Scientifically developed resources to get your child reading without tears!
